Widely esteemed for her motivating solo appearances in addition to being highly regarded for her musical orchestral performing leadership, trumpeter Pamela Smitter-Baker captivates her audiences with a rare blend of compelling yet expressive musical style. It is no surprise, then, that she enjoys an avid fan base and is very much in demand. Recent solo engagements include appearing as guest artist with the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra (WMSO), performing the Hummel Concerto to critical acclaim. During the past decade, she has held the position of Principal Trumpet with the WMSO. In 2010, Pamela became a Schilke artist.

Previously she led a distinguished performing career in South America holding the position of Principal Trumpet in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Maracaibo in Venezuela. Subsequently, she won the Principal Trumpet position with the prestigious Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela, Caracas. These associations provided the impetus for numerous solo engagements throughout Venezuela. Her immersion into Latin America significantly influenced her philosophy that music can represent the written word through color and line, leading ultimately to the development of her unique vocal style of trumpet artistry.

An avid teacher and mentor, she serves as Lead Musician for the Carnegie LinkUP program in the WMSO, coaching participating area teachers and musician mentor colleagues, and interacting in local music classrooms. This enthusiasm for encouraging interest in music continues in her commitment to the Kalamazoo Symphony Brass Quintet for educational concerts.

Pamela has great respect for U.S. Military veterans and serves as the West Michigan Director within the network Bugles Across America. She plays [in addition to coordinating other capable trumpeters to do the same] for memorial services and civic events. She is committed to honoring veterans with a beautiful, live performance of Taps at their funerals.

In addition she enjoys invitations as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek Symphony Orchestras. She has previously held the positions of Professor of Trumpet (Adjunct) at Hope College and Alma College, and Spanish at Grand Valley State University.
